Alopi Devi Mandir: The Temple of the Disappearing Goddess
Alopi Devi Mandir, located in Alopibagh near the holy Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, is a temple steeped in mystery and divine significance. It is one of the most unique temples in India, as it does not house an idol but instead features a wooden carriage or “doli,” which is worshipped as the symbol of the goddess.
Situated near the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the Saraswati rivers, this temple is a major spiritual destination, especially during the Kumbh Mela. Historically, the Maratha warrior Shreenath Mahadji Shinde developed the Sangam area during his stay in Prayagraj in 1771–1772. Later, in the 1800s, Maharani Baizabai Scindia contributed to the renovation of the Sangam ghats and temples, including Alopi Devi Mandir.
Legends
- Sati’s Disappearance: One legend ties the temple to the story of Sati. After her death, Lord Shiva carried her body across the skies. Vishnu, to relieve Shiva’s grief, used his Chakra to dismember the body, scattering its parts across India. The final part fell at this location, hence the name “Alopi” (disappeared). However, this claim is debated, as the Shakti Peeth in Prayagraj is traditionally associated with Lalita Devi Temple.
- The Disappearing Bride: Another popular oral tradition tells of a marriage procession that passed through a forest notorious for dacoits. The robbers attacked the group, looting and killing everyone, but when they unveiled the bride’s carriage, they found it empty. The bride had mysteriously disappeared. Locals began to worship the site as Alopi Devi.

It is considered a guardian deity, with locals sharing every major life event—marriage, birth, or death—with the goddess.
